Back to agenda The sustainability impact analysis material by material: Wood offsite/DfMA Thu 23 Sep | 13:00 - 14:00 In the 21st century, where smart and modern technologies are developing at a hyper-accelerated pace, the construction industry has survived for centuries, despite its slow pace of technological adaptations, low productivity, lower sustainability and widely reported skills shortages. Technological advancement is the catalyst to solve these problems by bringing together extreme importance to transform the construction industry in line with industrialisation, digitalisation and globalisation. The sequential industrial revolutions have evolved into today’s Fourth Industrial Revolution, which is also known as Industry 4.0, where off-site construction leads to the reduction of on-site labour intensity and shifts it to factory-based manufacturing paradigms. Six typologies of off-site construction have been revealed: Components, Panels, Pods, Modules, Complete Buildings and Flat Pack. And now comes the good part, wood is carving a niche within the development of these off-site construction typologies through a by addressing sustainability and circular construction in the 21st century technological advances available in the construction industry worldwide.
